Alliance Automotive Group UK and Ireland support MOT Frequency Petition

21 Feb 2023

Category: AAG News, Articles

As the market leading UK distribution network, Alliance Automotive Group UK&I recognise the importance of protecting the current frequency of MOT tests.

The UK government is currently evaluating a proposal to change the date a vehicle takes its first MOT test from 3 years to 4 years, the so called 4-1-1 pattern. With enough signatures, the petition will force the government to respond to our concerns, so we are asking for your support to sign the petition and sharing it around to maximise the signatures it receives.

Any reduction in the MOT frequency will be:

  • Dangerous: Increased casualties and deaths caused by vehicle defects (1,759 casualties were caused by vehicle defects in 2021)
  • Expensive: Increased vehicle repair, maintenance & insurance costs
  • Damaging: Increased pollution & congestion levels
  • Unnecessary: There is little evidence to suggest motorists want to change MOT frequency

Steve Richardson, Managing Director, said:

“With more than 300,000 vehicles failing the first MOT in 2021, a change to the MOT pattern would almost certainly lead to an increase in unsafe vehicles on UK roads, potentially resulting in more accidents, injuries and fatalities. Extending the first MOT period also means a vehicle and its emissions go unchecked for longer, causing more harm to the environment and people, potentially costing motorists more money from worsening problems. I firmly believe that, to ensure motoring is as safe and cost-effective as possible, a vehicle should be inspected as serviced regularly. “
